Four cracked sheets at the bottom of a fibro fence sound like a small, cheap job. They are not. Victorian removalists publish a minimum job charge of $800 to $1,500, and that one figure explains more surprised phone calls than anything else in this trade.
Asbestos removal cost in Geelong is hard to pin down, for an honest reason. Nobody in Geelong or the wider Barwon region publishes a price list. Every figure below comes from Victorian suppliers, Victorian councils or national cost guides, and all of them are Melbourne metro benchmarks rather than Geelong rates. Two of those suppliers price regional work separately anyway.
Prices here are indicative and GST treatment varies between providers, so ask each removalist whether their quote includes GST. None of these numbers is a quote from us.
Why the minimum job charge sets the floor on asbestos removal cost
Fibro fencing runs roughly $20 to $50 a sheet to remove and dispose of. That figure is real, and on its own it is misleading, because very little residential work lands under the $800 to $1,500 minimum.
The minimum covers what happens whether the job is four sheets or forty. A licensed removalist has to notify WorkSafe before starting, control the work area, take the material down whole rather than breaking it, then wrap and label every package to EPA requirements. After that someone drives a legal load to a tip authorised to receive it.
None of that gets cheaper because your pile is small. Which is why a per sheet rate tells you almost nothing about what a small patch will actually cost.

Asbestos testing cost comes first, and it is the cheap part
You cannot identify asbestos by eye, and no removalist should price a job on a guess. A single sample analysed by a NATA accredited laboratory runs $88 to $160.
Most houses need three to eight samples, because every different material has to be tested separately. A fence, an eaves lining and a bathroom wall sheet are three samples, not one. Larger properties run to eight or twelve.
Labs price this two different ways. Some charge a flat rate per sample however many you send, and some drop the price from the second sample onwards. Worth asking which one you are dealing with before you post off a box of five.
If you would rather someone else took the samples, an on-site inspection with sampling included runs $395 to $900 on a Melbourne metro basis. Standard lab turnaround is one to five business days. Expect a surcharge of 25% to 50% for a result inside 24 to 48 hours.

Two independent Victorian suppliers land within $5 of each other on the general per square metre rate, which is about as much agreement as this market offers.
Three Barwon jobs and what moved the price
A 1960s fibro fence line along the back boundary in Norlane. Around twenty two sheets, roughly 25 square metres of non-friable sheeting, weathered and chipped along the bottom edge where the mower has clipped it for years. Nobody prices a run like that by the sheet. It is quoted as a whole fence, at $1,000 to $3,500. The job is well past 10 square metres and well past an hour of work, which is the plain reason it belongs with a licensed removalist. A Super Six garage roof in Corio that has started to crack. A single garage roof sits in the $3,500 to $5,500 band, or $40 to $120 a square metre if the removalist prices it by area. Condition matters more than age here. Sheets that are crumbling or badly degraded can be treated as friable, and friable material is Class A work with no exemption at any quantity, which changes both the crew and the price.

Eaves on a 1970s brick veneer in Belmont, found midway through a kitchen renovation. A full set of eaves runs $1,500 to $2,500. The sting in this one is the tradesperson. The moment a paid worker is on site, the legal caps below apply as law rather than as advice, and a builder who disturbs asbestos without checking has a problem of their own to sort out.
Where the 10 square metre rule really sits
The limit everyone quotes is 10 square metres. The rule has a second half that keeps getting dropped: non-friable material may be removed without a licence only where the area does not exceed 10 square metres in total, and no more than one hour of asbestos removal work is done in any seven day period. Both caps have to hold, and the hour is cumulative across jobs rather than per job.
Then there is the part most asbestos content gets wrong. Those regulations bind employers and self-employed people at workplaces, and WorkSafe Victoria’s compliance code states that a home is not treated as a workplace when the owner is doing the work there.
So it is not accurate to say a homeowner breaks the law by removing more than 10 square metres at their own house. The accurate version is duller. That is the limit the law sets for anyone doing this as work, WorkSafe recommends homeowners follow the same code anyway, and the caps become law the moment a tradesperson, a tenant, a rental property or a paid helper is involved. Friable material is never covered at any quantity.
Victoria also has no “licensed asbestos assessor” class, whatever a NSW page tells you. The licences here are Class A, covering friable asbestos and everything below it, and Class B, covering non-friable only. Almost all residential work around Geelong is Class B. There is a practical consequence for your timeline. A licence holder must notify WorkSafe at least 24 hours before a job of 10 square metres or less of non-friable material, and at least five days before anything larger. That duty sits on the removalist, never on you. It is also why nobody credible can start tomorrow morning on a big job.
Disposal: one licensed tip in the whole region
Exactly one facility in the Barwon region is licensed to receive asbestos, and it is Drysdale Landfill, run by the City of Greater Geelong under EPA licence OL000072476. It takes small domestic quantities only, capped at a 6x4 trailer load.
Ring (03) 5251 2935 before you go anywhere near it. Landfills authorised to take asbestos can still decline a load, and you may need to book a time so staff are ready. Fees apply, and the asbestos gate fee is not published anywhere we could verify, so ask on that call.
For scale only, other Victorian councils (not Geelong) charge between $100 and $376 a tonne at the gate. That is close to a fourfold spread across three shires, which is exactly why a single “Victorian disposal price” would mislead you.
This is the bit that catches Surf Coast people out. Every transfer station in the shire refuses asbestos outright, Torquay, Anglesea, Winchelsea and Lorne included. Colac Otway Shire publishes no asbestos option at all, and no commercial licensed receiver serves the Geelong area. If you are in Torquay, Lorne or Colac, your one legal destination is on the Bellarine.

What is not in the quote
Replacement. A removal quote covers taking the material away and nothing else. A new fence, a re-roof, re-cladding or making good is separate work you arrange directly with a registered builder, and a quote that bundles removal and replacement into one number is quoting domestic building work.
A concrete slab under a garage is priced separately, roughly $60 to $180 a square metre, and plenty of people leave theirs in place.
The clearance certificate is usually its own line. Above 10 square metres of Class A or Class B work it is required, and it has to come from an independent person who is not the removalist and has no financial interest in the job. On a domestic job that duty sits with the removalist rather than with you, which is worth knowing before you agree to chase one yourself.
