Most people find us in the middle of a problem. A fence has cracked along the back boundary, a garage roof has started to break up, or a renovation has stopped because nobody can say what the sheeting is. We don't hold a removal licence and we don't claim one: we take samples, have them analysed, and put you in touch with licensed asbestos removalists who quote and carry out the work themselves. You contract with them directly, and their WorkSafe Victoria licence number is on the quote.
Diagnosis starts with the material, not the house. Every different material is its own sample, so a fence, an eaves lining and a bathroom wall sheet are three tests rather than one, and most houses need three to eight. Victoria's OHS Regulations allow only a laboratory approved by NATA to identify asbestos in a sample, which means nobody's eye counts, including ours. Once the result is in, two things set the scope: whether the material is friable, and how much of it there is. Nearly all residential fibro around Geelong is non-friable and falls to a Class B licence holder, including fence lines, Super Six roofing, eaves and shed cladding. Friable material, such as pipe lagging or sheeting that is crumbling or fire damaged, is Class A work at any quantity, with no exemption for small amounts. Quantity decides the rest: 10 square metres and one hour in any seven days are the limits the law sets for anyone doing this as work, and a full fence line or a garage roof is well past both.
A quote reads better when you know what belongs on it. The minimum job charge, $800 to $1,500 in Victoria, is the reason a two-sheet repair costs what it does. A clearance certificate, which is required once the job passes 10 square metres of non-friable material, sits on its own line at $165 to $250, because the person who issues one has to be independent of the removalist, and disposal is a separate cost again, since the waste can only go to a landfill authorised to receive it and Drysdale is the only one in the Barwon region. Fibro cladding, an eaves lining and a vinyl floor tile are three materials and three separate results. Most houses need three to eight samples, and a larger property can run to eight or twelve. Judging a whole house from one sheet is how a scope goes wrong.
Those two answers decide who is allowed to do the work. Non-friable fibro is Class B, friable material is Class A at any quantity, and the 10 square metre and one hour caps that bind anyone doing this as work are why a fence line or a roof is never a weekend job.
